SBCA Update — January 2022

by Gil Skinner, President, SBCA Board of Directors

Wow, what a year 2021 turned out to be! My guess is that few would have predicted that the awful angst of Covid-19 would follow us through the entire year and still be a huge impediment to “normality” as we once knew it, as we closed out 2021. No comforting words here. What we can do is continue to get vaccinated, wear our masks, and practice safe social habits. Let’s all work together so we can quit this type of messaging, please.

On to the Bay Club.

December brought our first large gathering to the Port Ludlow Performing Arts (PLPA) Concert on December 5, a sold-out event that was needed (and enjoyed!) by many. There is nothing like some fine singing, a little laughter and strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols to pump up your spirits! Thank you PLPA for bringing this event to us. We are looking forward to more concerts.

I want to give a ‘job well done’ commendation to our Activities Committee for getting the holiday decorations up and the Club looking festive. We have received several nice compliments about the decorations. Thanks to all who helped!

The SBCA Board is continuing the work of defining a long-range plan, and we hope to schedule a member meeting early next year to begin sharing ideas. The data from the SBCA survey that was completed on December 1 will be used to aid the Board in its planning. We had 216 responses and as of this writing the Board is still compiling the information. Be assured that once the Board has had the opportunity to look at and analyze the data, we will be sharing our thoughts with the membership. Thank you all who participated.

One area the Board is considering is increasing our Associate membership. We currently have approximately 20 available memberships and urge all members to see if they know someone who might be interested in joining the Club. Our outstanding social activities (DG Bistro, interest groups, parties, etc.) combined with our great workout area, pool, woodworking shop and kiln are available to Associate members. Great people, great fun – come join us!

Looking ahead to January, the SBCA Board will be hosting new-member orientations at the Bay Club for members who moved to the area in 2020 and 2021. There will be six 90-minute sessions, two per day on January 18, 19, and 20, at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Registration is required as we will be limiting each session to 20 attendees. We encourage all new members to sign up for a session. Please call the Bay Club to register.

With all the great equipment we have available, the Health and Fitness Committee is considering an open house early in 2022 to introduce newcomers (and some of us old-timers who haven’t been working out) to how everything works and to provide encouragement to fulfill the annual “I’m getting in shape this year” resolution. The Health and Fitness Committee is also starting a monthly communiqué on fitness issues. Watch for the e-blasts from the Club.

The SBCA Board is continuing to work cooperatively with the leadership of the LMC to provide more ease of use between the two clubs. Small steps lead to bigger things, and we all are hopeful for a more unified community.

Finally, to circle back to the lead paragraph, this has been a tough year. Short tempers and depression seem to be related pandemics. Let’s all increase our efforts at being kind. Remember the old saying, “We may disagree but do not have to be disagreeable.” And every day, be thankful for the wonderful community where we live, Port Ludlow.
