PLWGA – Women’s 18 Hole League News
The Port Ludlow Women’s Golf Association’s (PLWGA) 2022 Opening Day on April 5 was great fun. The theme, “Don’t Let the Old Lady In,” set by Chairpersons Peggy Selby and Mandy Whipple encouraged members to keep doing youthful things, like playing golf, to ward off becoming old. Following the opening day luncheon, Peggy and Mandy encouraged the membership’s youthful mindfulness by sharing some new jargon of today’s youth. These outrageous words led to laughs all around the tables. Everyone enjoyed the goodie bags distributed by the event chairs. Bag highlights were a sleeve of crystal golf balls donated by former PLWGA member Bets Cragoe and delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies by Jimmy Selby.
PLWGA 2022 Officers:

— Co-Captain, Elaine Girard
— Treasurer, Linda Haskin
— Secretary, Shayna Worley
— Member-at-Large, Meryl Friedman
The league now has 43 members: 35 active playing members and eight social members. News was shared of longtime PLWGA Member, Sue Carlson, and her husband Don departing Port Ludlow to be near their family in Ohio. Linda Aho shared handicap information and posting rules, emphasizing the need to enter scores hole by hole on the same day of play. Distributed at the luncheon was the PLWGA 2022 Handbook, created by Diana Smeland and Linda Haskin.
Bonnie Vahcic and Lucinda Thompson highlighted the coming 2022 Washington State Public Links Association (WSPLA) tournament season. Members have two chances to qualify to play in the WSPLA Championship, by playing in the Eagle Pride Tournament or the Apple Tree Tournament. The WSPLA Championship is a three-day women’s event (July 11-13) hosted by our very own Port Ludlow Golf Course! Women’s golfers from the entire state will participate in this exciting event. Vahcic and Thompson have secured discounted rates at all three casino hotels and at the Inn at Port Ludlow.
Spring Fling Chairperson, Vahcic, announced that “Casino Royale” will be the theme of the two-day PLWGA Spring Fling Tournament on May 9-10. Linda Haskin is organizing casual Friday Golf. PLWGA Members need to contact Linda to be placed on the Golf Genius “Friday Casual Golf” email list.
The Port Ludlow Lady Niners News
Lady Niners’ Captain, Barbara Burke, has planned many interesting Thursday Games. The format of these games allows members to post scores for their handicap while still using the scores to determine Thursday play day winners. Members should continue to use Golf Genius to sign up for play on Thursday mornings. The 2022 Lady Niners officers are: Captain Barbara Burke, Co-Captain Sharon Russell, Treasurer Elaine Girard, Couples Chairpersons Barb and Mike Burke.
The Nifty Niners March cocktail party at the Bay Club was enjoyed by all. New Head Professional Jim Mancill welcomed the membership and shared his golf background. Lady Niners’ Captain Barbara Burke encouraged a member of Men’s Niners to step up to the Men’s Niners’ Captain position. Until then, Barb will send out the Thursday play invitations on Golf Genius to both the Men Niners and the Lady Niners.
The first Couples Golf event is May 27. Details will be emailed to all members. Niners’ Couples Chairpersons, Mike and Barbara Burke, have announced multiple couples golf game formats for the 2022 Season.
