Port Ludlow Performing Arts: The Sound of Music Returns

by Peggy Welker, Publicity Chairperson

The “sound of music” is once again returning to Port Ludlow. On Sunday, September 5, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m., Port Ludlow Performing Arts (PLPA) is sponsoring a FREE outdoor concert on the lawn area directly below Grace Christian Center. The purpose of this family friendly event is to welcome back our past patrons and to introduce PLPA to the many new members of our community.

To make the day even more exciting, the Port Ludlow Art League will be hosting their 2021 Art Fair at the Inn at Port Ludlow.  From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. you will be able to browse unique works for sale by local artists, including jewelry, watercolors, acrylics, photographs, woodworking, ceramics, books, cards, and baskets, while enjoying views of the Port Ludlow Marina and the Olympic Mountains.

The outdoor concert will feature two of the most outstanding groups from the Pacific Northwest!  From 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. will be Next Up which is a Northwest super group of talented musicians and recording artists, including some who have performed on the world stage alongside Oscar Peterson, Supertramp, Jonathan Butler as well as local groups Freddie Pink, The Relics, Emerald City Horns and Backstreet Jellyroll, among others. They bring their own blend of danceable soul and rock ‘n’ roll from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Featuring local musician Kelly Carpenter, Next Up is back by popular demand after entertaining Port Ludlow residents with a fabulous “Music on the Green”concert several years ago.

From 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Black Diamond Junction (BDJ) will take the stage.

Black Diamond Junction

They began in 2014 as a project to bring some of the best musicians in northwest Washington together, creating a project to perform songs no other groups in the area were doing at the time. Over the years, BDJ added new friends to its core performers and has landed on the formula that consistently draws large crowds…flocking to see shows featuring superior musicianship and entertainment. BDJ has been named the region’s “Best Live Entertainment Group” in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. You will hear a little of everything, including artists such as: The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Doobie Brothers. and Linda Ronstadt. Great covers and phenomenal vocals, BDJ shows are true dancing and sing-along events. Expect high energy, superior musicianship and some humor as well.

Parking for the event will be well marked and directed by volunteers.  It will be located in the upper Yacht Club parking lot and parking areas above the Bridge Deck. Handicapped parking will be available in Grace Christian Church parking lot for those unable to walk the distance from the parking area to the concert.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available during the concert through two local vendors.  The God Bless Coffee food truck located by Grace Christian Church will offer their full menu of gourmet coffee, sandwiches, sweets, etc.  You can view the menu on their website, at gbfcatering.com/general-9.  In addition, Port Ludlow’s Dusty Green Café will be offering box lunches and a variety of beverages.

PLPA would like to thank all of those who have made this concert possible, including Terri Ross for underwriting the concert; Port Ludlow Associates for use of the space and the golf cart; and Grace Christian Center for use of their parking area and facilities.

Come one, come all and mark your calendars for Sunday of Labor Day Weekend so you don’t miss the biggest event of the year in Port Ludlow.
